Former Russian Colonel Suggests Dramatic North Pole Explosion as Geopolitical Gesture

In a recent statement on Russian state-run TV, retired Russian colonel Konstantin Sivkov, who serves as the deputy president of the Russian Academy of Rocket and Artillery Sciences, put forth a controversial idea.

He suggested the possibility of detonating nuclear weapons at the North Pole “if necessary” as a means to convey a message to the West.

Russian Colonel Proposes Detonating Nuclear Weapons

During his speech, Sivkov called for the potential deployment of nuclear weapons and showcased their presence at the North Pole as a demonstration, albeit under certain circumstances.

He cited a past test of a 58-megaton thermonuclear aerial bomb on Novaya Zemlya, which he claimed was successful and served as a powerful educational message.

Sivkov emphasized his desire for Russia to prioritize the “intensive mass-scale development of strategic nuclear weapons,” arguing that such armament would provide protection “against any possible encroachments” on the Russian Federation.

He further advocated for the adoption of unconventional forms of using nuclear weapons, specifically referring to high-powered nuclear munitions capable of causing severe geophysical consequences, such as supervolcano explosions.

The retired colonel strongly insisted that the deployment of these nuclear weapons is strategically imperative.

These statements come amidst repeated nuclear threats made by Russian officials against Ukraine and the rest of the world.

One notable instance involved former President and Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia, Medvedev, who has threatened to use nuclear weapons against Ukraine on multiple occasions.
