Transgender Candidate Makes Political Strides: Joining Elected Officials in Multiple States

Émilia Decaudin, a 24-year-old aspiring politician, is on the cusp of making history as the first openly transgender person to hold elected office in the state of New York.

The Rise of Transgender Politicians

With notable figures like Delaware state Sen. Sarah McBride and Virginia delegate Danica Roem leading the way, the 2022 election cycle holds the potential for a breakthrough in trans representation.

Decaudin, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, previously secured a Democratic Party post in 2020.

If successful in her campaign, she would join a growing cohort of trans politicians who are reshaping political landscapes across the country.

Senator Sarah McBride, currently the highest-ranking trans-elected official, seeks to secure Delaware’s sole seat in the House of Representatives. Meanwhile, Danica Roem, the first openly trans person elected to a state legislature, vies for an open state Senate seat in northern Virginia.

Transgender candidates are pushing for greater representation not only in New York but also in other states.
