Alef, a California-based carmaker, has made history by receiving the Federal Aviation Administration’s Special Airworthiness Certification for its Model A flying car, making it the first of its kind (FAA).
This historic certification grants the vehicle the legal ability to fly in the United States, though with significant limitations, as a result of ongoing policy development for electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicles.
Alef’s Model A Flying Car Receives Historic FAA Certification
Alef’s innovative concept aims to alleviate modern congestion and revolutionize commuting with its dual functionality of driving on the street and taking off vertically when required.
It highlighted its role as a pioneer in the field of flying automobiles when it revealed that it had obtained the Special Airworthiness Certification.
As the FAA continues to shape regulations for eVTOL vehicles, the certification specifies the permitted locations and purposes for the Model A’s flight operations.
Alef has been actively conducting test drives and test flights of a full-size prototype since 2019, demonstrating its commitment to realizing its vision of urban air mobility.
The Model A, an entirely electric vehicle, boasts a driving range of 200 miles and a flight range of 110 miles, catering to both ground transportation and short airborne journeys.
Alef asserts that the vehicle seamlessly integrates with existing urban driving and parking infrastructure.
By taking advantage of its proprietary technology, the Model A can elevate above traffic without requiring traditional runways, promising faster and more convenient commutes.
It emphasizes the importance of safety and stability during flight. The two-seater vehicle offers a smooth and stable ride, ensuring occupants remain stable throughout the flight.
Additionally, the Model A is equipped with a full-vehicle ballistic parachute, enhancing safety measures and providing peace of mind to passengers.

Shipping Plans and Pre-Orders
With a target price of $300,000, Alef initiated pre-sales for the Model A in October. Interested buyers can secure their place in the queue by placing a deposit of either $150 or $1,500 for priority access.
Alef reports receiving substantial pre-orders from individuals and companies, signaling strong interest in their innovative product.
The company aims to commence shipping the Model A in the final quarter of 2025, ushering in a new era of personal air transportation.
Future Developments: Looking beyond the Model A, Alef is already working on the development of the “Model Z,” a four-person sedan scheduled for introduction in 2035 at a significantly lower price point of $35,000.
The company’s ambitious plans and vision have garnered support from notable backers, including SpaceX, the space exploration company led by Elon Musk.
