A Green Milestone: Maryland Implements Recreational Marijuana Law

In a landmark move, Maryland officially legalized the recreational use of marijuana for adults on Saturday, marking a significant step forward for cannabis enthusiasts in the state.

The legislation allows residents aged 21 and older to purchase, possess, use, and even cultivate limited quantities of marijuana.

Maryland Breaks New Ground

The move comes after Maryland residents voted in favor of recreational cannabis use in a referendum during the November election.

The Cannabis Reform Act was subsequently signed into law by Democratic Governor Wes Moore in May, solidifying the state’s commitment to progressive drug policies.

Under the new law, adults in Maryland will be permitted to grow up to two marijuana plants for personal use and possess up to 1.5 ounces of cannabis.

The substance will be taxed at a rate of 9%, contributing to the state’s revenue.

The legislation also offers relief to individuals who were previously penalized for growing cannabis plants, as it lifts the previous restrictions on cultivation.

However, it’s important to note that while Maryland residents can now buy, possess, and use marijuana, its consumption is limited to private residences.

Public smoking is still strictly prohibited, as emphasized by Dawn Berkowitz, the deputy director of the Maryland Cannabis Administration.

The Cannabis Reform Act also includes provisions for expunging previous marijuana-related convictions that are no longer considered illegal under the new law.

Those currently serving sentences for such offenses will be eligible for resentencing. Individuals previously convicted of possession with the intent to distribute can petition the courts for expungement three years after completing their sentences.

Another significant development is the state’s decision to allow medical cannabis companies to serve adult consumers.
