Spacecraft Catastrophe: Private Mission Ends in Tragedy Following SpaceX Launch

In a disappointing turn of events for Launcher, a space tug named Orbiter SN3 spun out of control after being deployed during a SpaceX rideshare mission on June 12.

The incident resulted in Launcher losing another one of its vehicles and raising concerns about its orbital deployment capabilities.

Launcher Faces Another Setback as Orbiter SN3 Spins Out of Control

Orbiter SN3, designed to transport small satellites to their intended orbits following launch, encountered difficulties in charging its batteries with solar panels due to the rapid and uncontrolled spinning, Launcher explained in a statement.

This malfunction adds to the setback experienced by Launcher, as its first spacecraft, SN1, was also lost earlier in February 2023 due to a similar orientation control issue, as reported by Space.com.

The consequences of this spinning mishap were not limited to Launcher alone. Orbiter SN3 was carrying payloads belonging to three other customers, which had to be released prematurely due to the spacecraft’s uncontrollable state. 

Consequently, the primary payload, an on-orbit docking demonstration by space startup Otter Pup, began spinning as well.

Despite this setback, Launcher remains determined to rectify the issue and move forward.

Addressing SN3 Issue and Preparing for Future Success with SN5

To prevent such occurrences in future missions and enhance the vehicle’s resilience against this type of error, corrective actions are being implemented.

The company aims to ensure more robust performance and prevent a recurrence of the spinning incident.

Launcher’s commitment to addressing the problem is vital for the success of its upcoming missions.

Despite this setback, SpaceX’s rideshare missions continue to draw interest, with a focus on the next frontier: asteroid mining. An asteroid mining startup is gearing up to launch its first mission, highlighting the ongoing innovation and ambition within the space industry.
