A recall by Ford Motor Company affecting more than 25,000 Explorer SUVs in the US has been the subject of an inquiry by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The recall was started as a result of complaints regarding repairs made to stop the cars from unexpectedly rolling out of the park.

The problem is caused by a rear axle mounting bolt that may fracture and cause the drive shaft to come loose.

The problem, which was due to fractures of a rear axle mounting bolt that might cause the drive shaft to detach, was solved, according to the agency, by a Ford software update that was developed to trigger the electronic parking brake if the drive shaft failed.

But, according to two car owners, their SUVs started functioning erratically after the repair.

The Explorer is alleged to have stopped abruptly while moving at speeds of up to 30 or 40 miles per hour in one of those occurrences.

On the other, it allegedly lurched into motion as the driver tried to deactivate the electronic brake.

The first driver did report that his Explorer continued rolling downhill following an abrupt stop, probably because the engine had disengaged. Nonetheless, there were no injuries reported in either occurrence.
