Donald Trump Allocates $5.5 Million as Initial Step to Fulfill E. Jean Carroll Judgment

Donald Trump will post $5.55 million with a federal court to appeal a jury verdict accusing him of sexual abuse and defamation against writer E. Jean Carroll.

Former President Donald Trump is challenging the recent verdict of $5 million rendered by a federal jury in Manhattan last month.

The jury concluded that Trump had defamed a former columnist for Elle magazine by dismissing her claim of being raped by him in the mid-1990s as a fabrication and falsehood.

U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan, who presided over the trial, has agreed to a deposit proposed by Joseph Tacopina, Trump’s attorney, with his law firm currently holding the sum of $5.55 million. It is common practice for courts to require a deposit of 111% of the judgment amount during the appeals process.

In the event that Trump’s appeals, including the possibility of an appeal to the Supreme Court, prove unsuccessful, the $5 million would be awarded to the plaintiff, E. Jean Carroll. However, if Trump emerges victorious, the set-aside funds, along with any accrued interest, would be returned to him.

In response to requests for further comments, Tacopina and his firm’s other attorneys have chosen to remain conspicuously silent. Meanwhile, Carroll’s legal team, representing the woman who accused Donald Trump of sexual assault, has accepted a substantial deposit of $5.55 million.

As the leading contender for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, Trump made a bold move on June 8 by seeking a new trial. He argued that the awarded damages were unreasonably high, citing the jury’s determination that Carroll had been subjected to sexual abuse rather than the rape she initially claimed.

Carroll’s lawyers promptly dismissed Trump’s plea for a fresh trial as mere wishful thinking. Undeterred by the ongoing legal battle, Carroll has pursued a separate lawsuit against Trump, seeking $10 million in damages for his public denial of her rape accusation in June 2019.

Additionally, Carroll seeks punitive damages due to Trump’s persistent denial of the allegations, even after the jury’s verdict was announced. It is worth noting that Trump reiterated his denials during a town hall meeting just one day after the jury’s decision.

The legal case, known as Carroll v Trump, is currently being heard in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, assigned docket number 22-10016.
