Hunter Biden is scheduled to appear before a judge next month to finalize a plea agreement regarding tax and gun charges.
The agreement is expected to prevent President Joe Biden’s son from serving a prison sentence, as stated in court documents released on Wednesday.
Judge’s Approval Needed for Hunter Biden Plea Agreement
The plea agreement resulting from an extensive federal investigation must receive the approval of U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika.
The agreement stipulates that the son of the president must plead guilty to two misdemeanor charges related to the failure to pay taxes. In addition, Hunter Biden must comply with court-imposed conditions to avoid facing full prosecution on a felony gun charge.
The hearing, scheduled for July 26, will serve as both the initial appearance and the plea agreement proceeding. The announcement of the plea deal on Tuesday drew criticism from Republicans who are conducting their own congressional investigations into various aspects of Hunter Biden’s business dealings, including foreign payments.

Special Prosecutor Appointed to Avoid Bias in Charges Against Trump
Attorney General Merrick Garland, who was traveling in Stockholm on Wednesday, stated that David Weiss, the U.S. attorney for Delaware, was granted complete authority to make a decision on the matter as he deemed appropriate, and he has fulfilled his responsibilities accordingly.
Former President Donald Trump and other Republicans have used this case to raise concerns about the independence of the Justice Department, particularly as Trump himself faces significant criminal charges.
The charges against Trump were brought by a special prosecutor appointed to avoid any perception of political bias.
On the other hand, the charges against Hunter Biden were filed by U.S. Attorney Weiss, who was appointed by Trump and retained during the Biden administration to continue certain aspects of the investigation. Judge Noreika was also appointed by Trump in 2017.
Hunter Biden’s lawyer has stated that the guilty pleas reflect his client’s willingness to take responsibility for the mistakes he made during a period of personal turmoil and addiction. According to his understanding, these pleas will bring an end to the five-year investigation involving his client.
