Russia Blocks Entry of Aid Workers into Flooded Regions Post Ukraine Dam Collapse, UN Says

According to the United Nations, Russia is preventing assistance workers from entering the region close to the dam collapse in southern Ukraine.

By Denise Brown, a UN In a statement, the humanitarian coordinator for Ukraine said that her team has been contacting the governments of Russia and Ukraine to request access to the region devastated by the collapse of the Kakhovka dam.

United Nations Accuses Russia

At least 14 people were murdered when the dam collapsed, which also brought about flooding in the area and forced evacuations.

According to Brown, Russia has rejected the United Nations’ request to send aid to the area.
In a statement, Brown stated that the Government of the Russian Federation has thus far rejected our request to access the territories under its temporary military control.

The UN will keep trying to get the access it needs.

It implores the Russian government to uphold its duties under international humanitarian law.

Russia had barred access to the UN

Attacks in the area made sending in supplies too unsafe, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters during a press conference.

He didn’t specify specifically if Russia had barred access to the UN

Russian forces may be to blame for the dam’s collapse, according to experts. 

AP investigation of drone images and data it had access to revealed that Russia had the ability and the chance to destroy the dam.

According to the AP, the images appear to show an explosives-filled automobile perched atop the dam’s construction.

The collapse of the dam has been attributed to both Russia and Ukraine, with Moscow alleging a missile or bomb was to blame. 

The AP pointed out that Russia’s explanations could not explain why the dam blast was detected by local seismic detectors.
