Researchers Uncover ‘Zombie Forest’ Phenomenon Spreading to New Western US Regions

A zombie forest is a group of trees (typically of the same species) that are unable to produce new saplings and seedlings due to a warming climate.

This problem is widespread due to regional variations, and California in particular has seen an increase in the prevalence of these zombie woods.

Unveiling Zombie Forests

Global warming has clearly led to an increase in extreme weather, but there is also another, less noticeable, factor at play.
The thousands of coniferous woods in California will be unable to repopulate due to rising ambient temperatures.

Eventually, thousands of ponderosa pines, sugar pines, and Douglas fir trees will be replaced with tree species that are better adapted to a hotter planet.

The Sierra Nevada’s rising temperatures are estimated to be unsuitable for at least one-fifth of these coniferous trees.

A zombie forest is a group of trees (typically of the same species) that are unable to produce new saplings and seedlings due to a warming climate.

In 77 years, there will likely be twice as many of these trees living outside their climate even in the best-case scenarios.

The burning of coal, oil, and gas in our cities and vehicles is to blame for the ongoing breaking of temperature records all around the world.

When used for energy, these dirty fuels release toxic pollutants into the atmosphere. Once there, they take in too much heat from the sun, which causes the Earth to get warmer.

To lessen any possible harm from the loss of these forests, states and local governments may adopt forest management plans.

Beyond that, switching from dirty fuels like oil, coal, and gas to renewable energy sources like solar and wind farms can help.
The use of nuclear power plants might lower the demand for oil and gas.
