Putin Deceptive Maneuvers: A Potential Exit Strategy from the Ukraine War

Vladimir Putin, the dictator of Russia, launched his second invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, intending to demilitarize and counter the country.

Both objectives were highly implausible, considering that Ukraine posed no military threat to Russia and the presence of genuine Ukrainian Nazis was extremely limited.

Putin Spokesperson’s Controversial Assertion

The absurdity is particularly evident when considering that it was Russia, under Putin’s leadership, that posed a military threat to Ukraine and exhibited characteristics associated with fascist regimes, such as authoritarianism, chauvinism, a ruthless dictator, and a cult of personality.

However, Putin’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, recently made an announcement that Ukraine has been demilitarized, which he claimed was a positive outcome.

Indeed, Ukraine was heavily militarized at the beginning of the Special Military Operation. And, as Putin stated yesterday, one of the objectives was to demilitarize Ukraine. In reality, this objective has been largely achieved. Ukraine is decreasing its use of its own weaponry and increasingly relying on weapon systems supplied by Western countries.

Perplexing Interpretation of Demilitarization

Vladimir Putin, the dictator of Russia, launched his second invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, intending to demilitarize and counter the country.

Peskov’s interpretation of demilitarization is perplexing. While it is true that Ukraine has depleted much of its Soviet-era equipment and ammunition, it has also received more effective, modern, and NATO-compatible weapon systems from over fifty countries in the Ramstein group.

It is unclear how this can be deemed as demilitarization, especially considering that Ukraine has launched what appears to be a successful counter-offensive.

Using the same reasoning, Peskov could argue that NATO enlargement has been halted because Finland joined the alliance and there are no countries to its east.

Nevertheless, Peskov’s illogical perspective aligns with the Kremlin’s narrative. According to their claims, Russia never attacked Ukraine, civilian areas were not targeted by their bombs, the Kakhovka dam explosion was the result of Ukrainian actions, the Bucha massacre did not occur, and Putin is a true advocate of democracy. Thus, they persist in substituting delusion for reality.

However, there may be more than mere foolishness at play. It is conceivable that Putin and his allies are aware of the deteriorating situation in the war.

This strategy may be overly clever for Putin and his cohorts. Alternatively, as Samuel Johnson aptly stated in 1777, “Depend upon it, sir, when a man knows he is to be hanged in a fortnight, it concentrates his mind wonderfully.”
