The Future of Intelligence: Will Artificial Intelligence Eclipse the Human Mind?

President Biden gave his most forthright warning to date about the strength of artificial intelligence at the Air Force Academy’s commencement speech earlier this month, saying that the technology may soon overtake human reasoning.

Anyone in the general public who has played around with OpenAI’s ChatGPT-4, Microsoft’s Bing, or Google’s Bard will likely think that the president’s dire prognostication is more akin to science fiction than true science.

The Power and Perils of Artificial Intelligence

They can aid in the preparation of difficult real-life interactions, the summarization of lengthy academic papers, and the explanation of fractional reserve banking at a high school level.

Nevertheless, some of the most well-known AI researchers in the world, who are far more knowledgeable than, say, Biden, have just begun to raise concerns about what will happen next.

Now, ChatGPT is powered by a large language model technology (LLM)

These systems process any given word sequence and forecast which words will come next because they have been trained to identify patterns in the mind-boggling volumes of text that make up the majority of anything on the internet.

They serve as an innovative illustration of artificial intelligence: a model developed to address a particular issue or offer a particular service.

LLMs are improving their chat skills in this situation, but they are unable to learn new skills.

Artificial general intelligence (AGI), or software that can learn any task or subject, has been the focus of decades of research. It is a higher kind of machine learning.

President Biden gave his most forthright warning to date about the strength of artificial intelligence at the Air Force Academy’s commencement speech earlier this month, saying that the technology may soon “overtake human reasoning.”

A machine that can perform any task that the human brain is capable of is referred to as AGI, also known as powerful AI.

In a 155-page study report that was released in March, a team of Microsoft computer scientists claimed that one of their new experimental AI systems were showing signs of artificial general intelligence.

How else can explain how it keeps coming up with humanlike responses and thoughts that weren’t built into it, as the New York Times recently described its conclusion?”

Geoffrey Hinton, a computer scientist and one of the ‘Godfathers of AI,’ left his position at Google in April in order to speak openly about the risks posed by AGI.

And in May, a group of business leaders (including Hinton) issued a one-sentence statement warning that if we don’t make sure that AGI’s goals line up with ours, it might pose an existential threat to civilization comparable to “pandemics and nuclear war.”
