China Extends Warm Welcome to US CEOs with Red Carpet Treatment

China is attempting to reestablish contact with the outside world after shutting down the nation for more than three years to stop the spread of COVID-19.

The superpower of Asia has received nearly all of Europe’s top leaders in recent months while also dispatching its top officials to other countries.

Yet China has adopted a different strategy to reestablish relations with the US: it has thrown out the red carpet for US CEOs.

The lavish welcome Elon Musk received in China was unusual. An apparently positive development for US-China relations and Tesla’s prospects in the nation, Musk was welcomed by Foreign Minister Qin Gang in addition to receiving time with the Ministers of Industry, Information Technology, and Commerce.

Yet not all US attempts will be successful. At a meeting they both attended in Singapore last month, Chinese Defense Minister Li Shangfu turned down the opportunity to speak with US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.

In addition, the two nations were unable to agree on Antony Blinken, the secretary of state, and Janet Yellen, the secretary of the treasury. 

It is evident to many influential people in China that China is more interested in conducting business with its largest opponent than it is in discussing politics.

Less than two weeks after China reopened its borders, Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, visited the China Development Forum 2023, an annual economic meeting supported by the government, on March 24.

Several people were shocked to see the audience cheer Cook’s appearance after numerous accidents at Apple’s production plants.at Gelsinger, the CEO of Intel, Laxman Narasimhan, the chairman emeritus of Starbucks, Howard Schultz, and Jamie Dimon, the CEO of JPMorgan, all conducted travels to China in the two months that followed, mostly to take part in public events.

According to a source in the Global Times, Beijing wants to emphasize that US businesses are resisting government efforts to divorce from China, and the CEO visits support this narrative.

An explanation for why Chinese elites stand up for the government when it comes to garnering much-needed foreign investment, but do the opposite when they are the target of political criticism from the United States.
