The GMB abandoned its proposal for union recognition at Amazon after accusing the e-commerce behemoth of dirty behavior.
Following several pay-related strikes, the GMB reported that 800 of its members were now employed in the company’s Coventry warehouse.
Amazon Amid Allegations Of ‘Dirty Tricks
This showed that more than half of the workers were unionized, which the union claimed was a need for statutory recognition.
The GMB claimed that after submitting a formal application to the Central Arbitration Committee, Amazon claimed to have 2,700 people working there (CAC).
Union employees at the Coventry factory claim that since the strike action started, the warehouse has been flooded with up to 1,000 new starts.
Amazon claims to regularly hire new staff, and this year was no exception. There will be additional strikes on June 12, 13, and 14.
According to Stuart Richards, senior organizer at GMB, Amazon notified people there were about 1,400 workers in Coventry early this year, during one of the busiest times for shopping.
When GMB asked for acknowledgment, Amazon launched a significant hiring drive.
Stuart Richards, GMBMB is of the opinion that this was just a reaction to GMB membership reaching so near to the threshold for statutory union registration.
Amazon has long refused to pay its workers a decent wage, but as part of an effort to dissolve the union, the business is now compensating an extra 1,300 workers.
