Most Californians Against Reparations Payments for Black Residents, Survey Shows

According to a recent survey, there doesn’t seem to be much support in California for a reparations scheme for Black residents.

Less than half of the Californians polled do not accept the idea of a task group on reparations that is determining how much the state may owe some Black residents, even if the majority of them believe racism exists in the state.

Reparations Plan for Black Residents in California

Despite the fact that 71% of Californians believe that racial and ethnic discrimination contributes to economic inequality in the country, only 43% of those surveyed said they support setting up a state task force to seek reparations, according to a survey by the nonprofit Public Policy Institute of California released on Monday.

Nearly 60% of respondents would support Gov. Gavin Newsom and the California legislature issuing an official apology for the state’s longstanding discriminating policies and practices.

Nearly a month after the first-of-its-kind nine-member reparations task force approved a series of recommendations suggesting as much as $1.2 million be given to qualified Black residents in California, the most recent findings from the PPIC, a San Francisco-based nonpartisan think tank, were released.

By June 30, the panel is supposed to present the California State Legislature with its final recommendations.

Following that, lawmakers will decide whether to carry out the reparations and whether to accept or amend the task force’s recommendations.

According to a recent survey, there doesn’t seem to be much support in California for a reparations scheme for Black residents.

California, which is predicted to have the fourth-largest economy in the world, may owe nearly $800 billion in reparations, which is slightly more than double the $306.5 billion state budget as of the present.

The findings about reparations are part of a broader state-wide study that was conducted between May 17 and 24 with more than 1,500 Californians.

Reparations polling offers a snapshot in time on their beliefs according to Mark Baldassare, survey director for the Public Policy Institute of California.

Additional reparation-related findings include that 42% of Californians surveyed believe racism is a huge problem, with the majority of those respondents identifying as either Democrats or Black.

Almost 8 out of 10 of those surveyed believe racism is a problem in the United States. Around 37% of respondents indicated that racism is somewhat of an issue.

Around 45% of Democrats, 51% of African Americans, 40% of Asian Americans, and 40% of college graduates believe that discrimination based on race and ethnicity has a great lot of impact on inequality.
