Donald Trump Receives Official Notification of Being the Focus of Criminal Investigation

A person with knowledge of the situation said that federal prosecutors have informed former president Donald Trump through a letter that he is the subject of an investigation.

That letter is the most obvious indication so far that special counsel Jack Smith is about to decide whether to charge someone in his investigation of the former president.

Donald Trump Notified of Impending Criminal Charges

Trump is being looked at for hiding reams of confidential documents at his estate and planning a plot to keep federal agents from discovering them.

One of Trump’s attorneys, Evan Corcoran, was brought in front of the grand jury looking into the papers issue in recent weeks following a legal spat over attorney-client privilege.

Smith has also brought in several other members of Trump’s inner circle.

Taylor Budowich, a former Trump spokesman, acknowledged on Wednesday that he had spent the morning appearing before a relevant grand jury that had been assembled in Florida.

The most recent actions indicated that Smith’s investigation was getting close to a probable charging decision, which now seems days, if not hours, away.

Another example is the letter to Trump. According to the Justice Department handbook, prosecutors may issue a target letter to individuals who are anticipated to face charges in relation to a grand jury investigation, providing them a chance to testify before an indictment is handed down.

A person with knowledge of the situation said that federal prosecutors have informed former president Donald Trump through letter that he is the subject of an investigation.

In Donald Trump’s Florida private club and home, Mar-a-Lago, the FBI discovered more than 300 documents with secret markings two months after the former president’s legal counsel asserted a thorough search had turned up nothing else.

Notifying a possible defendant that they are a target is a formal means to say that they are the subject of a criminal investigation, and it frequently comes before charges are brought.

The notification normally gives defense attorneys the opportunity to ask for a meeting with prosecutors to present their cases.

When asked directly by The New York Times if he had been informed that he would be indicted, Donald Trump responded that the claim was not true.

But, when asked if he had been informed that he was the subject of a federal investigation, Mr. Trump dodged the question, saying “You have to understand” that he was not in contact with the investigating team.

He continued by saying, “It’s not accurate,” that he had been informed that he would be indicted.

Shortly after, Trump, who was at his club in Bedminster, New Jersey, sent a statement on his social media platform disputing Mr. Solomon’s assertion.
