Following negotiations, it was determined that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) would provide this funding to New York City specifically for the purpose of caring for and assisting asylum seekers, as stated in an official press release.

Under the newly established Shelter Services Program, the allocated funds will be utilized to address the challenges posed by the recent influx of asylum seekers, as highlighted by Jeffries. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive and collaborative approach involving all levels of government to effectively resolve this issue.

Furthermore, the press release reveals that the Biden administration had previously provided an additional $38.4 million to support New York City in managing the influx of undocumented immigrants.

The ongoing migrant crisis has led to New York City Mayor Eric Adams organizing the transportation of migrants across the state, a move that has prompted legal action from 30 counties within New York.

According to the city’s reports, approximately 74,000 migrants have arrived since last spring, leading to the establishment of 160 facilities to accommodate the increased numbers.

Mayor Adams and the Biden administration have engaged in public disagreements over this matter.

Adams criticized the president’s response to the migrant crisis in New York City, characterizing it as callous. He also pointed out that both Democratic and Republican officials, such as Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Democratic Colorado Governor Jared Polis, have transported migrants to the city.

Former Deputy Department of Homeland Security Secretary Ken Cuccinelli, who served during the Trump administration, previously described Biden’s border policies as “pathetically weak” in response to the surge in illegal immigration under the current administration.

Based on data from the U.S. Border Patrol, the southern border has witnessed more than 1.2 million instances of interactions with unauthorized immigrants throughout the current fiscal year, which encompasses the period from September to April.
