The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is arguably the most prevalent form of state assistance in the United States (SNAP). It is generally referred to as food stamps, and 53 states and territories participate.

Individuals who receive food stamps are permitted to use them at grocery stores and other approved retailers.
Households consist of all individuals who reside together and consume the majority of their meals together. Prior to receiving food stamps, households must fulfill all eligibility requirements.
Using the federal poverty level, eligibility for food assistance is determined for each household.
The gross income limit for food stamps ranges between 130 and 200 percent of the federal poverty level. In addition, both earned and unearned income are included in the calculation.

Maximum Monthly Income Requirements
Earned income is the quantity shown on a paystub or other wage document prior to taxes and other deductions. Unearned income is also considered. This includes social security payments, child support payments, withdrawals from retirement accounts, and the vast majority of other sources of income.
In 2023, the maximum gross monthly income for a family of three is 2,495 dollars at 130 percent of the federal poverty line, 3,072 dollars at 160 percent, 3,168 dollars at 165 percent, 3,552 dollars at 185 percent, and 3,840 dollars at 200 percent.
In California, in 2023, households must be at 200 percent of the federal poverty level to qualify for food assistance, and there is no asset limit for eligibility.
