Enias Cailliau was inspired by the growing acceptance of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and the ensuing flurry of personality-driven AI chatbots to develop a virtual clone of his fiancée, Sacha Ludwig.
He was inspired by chatbots like CarynAI, an AI-powered creation of Snapchat celebrity Caryn Marjorie, but some of those AI chatbots turned him off, he told Insider. Subscribers pay CarynAI $1 per minute.
Creating Personalized AI Companions
In order to allow people to personalize GirlfriendGPT with their special characteristics, he decided to make it an open-source project.
According to Motherboard’s findings, Cailliau used a Large Language Model (LLM) architecture to develop Ludwig’s AI version.
After that, he customized it by utilizing Google’s Bard chatbot, the company’s answer to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and an AI text-to-speech generator to mimic Ludwig’s voice.
The bot could then send voice messages over Telegram.
According to Motherboard, Cailliau also made use of a text-to-image creation application that enables GirlfriendGPT to send him selfies.
It might eventually evolve to a situation in which people communicate with either a single digital partner or two different copies of their partners.

Advancing GirlfriendGPT
The project is still being worked on in some areas. Despite being trained on her YouTube videos and personalized voice recordings, Cailliau claimed the voice doesn’t quite sound like Ludwig.
He added that the selfie-creating tool frequently fails, with one case in particular coming to mind.
While Cailliau had experimented with developing different AI personas, like middle-aged Karen chatbots and gym bro chatbots, he told Insider that he had found them difficult to judge.
He claimed that evaluating a clone of his actual partner, the person he lives with, was much simpler for him, which is what led to the creation of GirlfriendGPT.
Including long-term memory, according to Cailliau, will allow for more meaningful dialogues and the ability to remember user preferences.
Cailliau added that he is working on creating a system that would record what people say to the computerized version of his girlfriend so he can monitor their behavior for anything odd.
Yet he claimed that the potential of outsiders acting inappropriately with the virtual Ludwig doesn’t bother him or his girlfriend.
