Exiting the Student Loan Pause: Why Immediate Repayment Might Not Be Necessary After June 30

Federal student loan debtors will soon have to begin payments after having their payments suspended for more than three years as part of COVID-19 relief efforts.

Although June 30, 2023 is the official date that everyone remembers, the exact time is still unknown.

The Fate of Student Loan Forgiveness Program

You almost probably won’t have to start repaying your loans on June 30 given the current state of affairs.

The US must comply by that date. The Department of Education announced the plan in a press release in November 2022, although there were conditions.

According to the Education Department, payments must restart on June 30 only if the federal student loan forgiveness program of the Biden administration has been put into effect and any legal disputes over it have not been resolved.

The August 2022 announcement of the forgiveness plan has not been carried out. The legal dispute is also far from being settled.

The US is presently examining the case. Several legal experts and the Supreme Court predict that the court will reject the forgiveness scheme.

The decision is anticipated in June.

Federal student loan debtors will soon have to begin payments after having their payments suspended for more than three years as part of COVID-19 relief efforts.

The most recent payment suspension, which is the ninth overall, is scheduled to end 60 days after either June 30 or the date the Supreme Court rules on the loan forgiveness program.

Payments should start again based on that deadline towards the end of August 2023.

A lot relies on how Democrats like West Virginia senator Joe Manchin vote.

Manchin has already criticized Biden’s policy because of its $400 billion estimated cost.

The administration was able to preserve its option to stop making student loan payments in the future in the event of an emergency, according to a source familiar with the negotiations, but it also codifies the government’s plans to resume loan payments at the end of the summer.

According to the source, the agreement also safeguards a repayment option for borrowers earning specific incomes that is based on income.
