Congress Votes to Overturn Biden’s Student Loan Forgiveness Initiative

The House of Representatives passed a resolution to repeal President Biden’s Student loan cancellation plan with a vote of 218-203.

House Joint Resolution 45 employs the Congressional Review Act to overturn the president’s initiative to cancel student loans of up to $20,000 for individuals earning less than $125,000 annually.

Center Democrats Oppose Student Loan Forgiveness

The resolution, which gained bipartisan support, has advanced to the Senate, where it requires a simple majority to reach the president’s desk. President Biden has expressed his intent to veto the bill. Notably, two Democratic representatives, Jared Golden (D-ME) and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-WA), joined forces with all Republicans in rebuking the president’s key measure.

During the House floor discussion, Representative Bob Good (R-VA), the resolution’s sponsor, emphasized the necessity for Congress to reclaim its authority and take action against President Biden’s unilateral actions, which exacerbate the financial crisis in higher education

A more responsible course for government expenditure is intended by the resolution. Members of the president’s own party who lean to the center have opposed the student loan forgiveness proposal.

The House of Representatives passed a resolution to repeal President Biden’s Student loan cancellation plan with a vote of 218-203.

Given the Democrats’ narrow majority in the Senate, the resolution has a reasonable chance of passing, with Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV), Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ), and John Tester (D-MT) previously demonstrating a willingness to deviate from the Democratic Party’s stance on various Congressional Review Act resolutions.

Despite potential internal party disagreements, House Democrats opposed the resolution, asserting the importance of education as a valuable investment that provides opportunities for success.

Representative Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) criticized the opposition’s prioritization of politics and special interests over students, claiming that President Biden’s loan forgiveness plan benefits borrowers with debt but without degrees, including those defrauded by educational institutions or unable to complete their studies due to other responsibilities.

The fate of the bill notwithstanding, the administration’s student loan forgiveness plan remains in legal uncertainty until the Supreme Court issues its ruling on its legality. The court heard oral arguments on the case in late February, and a decision is anticipated in the coming weeks
