New Mexico taxpayers have until May 31st to file their 2021 Personal Income Tax Returns and receive rebates of up to $1,000, as per Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s office.
The deadline for filing income tax returns to qualify for the rebate is Wednesday, May 31st. The rebate amounts are $500 for single filers, $1,000 for couples filing jointly, and heads of household.
Separating Rebates from Tax Returns
New Mexico Governor Lujan Grisham emphasized the high cost of essential goods nationwide and expressed the desire to ensure that the state’s families benefit from its favorable financial situation.
Individuals who have already filed their tax returns will automatically receive the rebate when it is disbursed in mid-June. The rebate is separate from tax refunds, and those who received their 2021 tax refunds via direct deposit will also receive the rebate through the same method.
Taxpayers who have changed their address since filing their 2021 return can update it through the Taxpayer Access Point self-service portal. Alternatively, they can complete and submit Form RPD-41260, known as the Personal Income Tax Change of Address form, to the Taxation and Revenue Department.

Application Process for Eligibility
New Mexico residents who did not have to file taxes in 2021 due to their income level may be eligible for relief payments in July.
However, in order to benefit from the relief funds, individuals will be required to submit an application once the application process officially commences.
The distribution of these much-needed relief payments will be conducted on a first-come, first-served basis, overseen by the state’s dedicated Human Services Department.
To access the financial assistance provided by the relief funds, individuals must proactively apply for consideration during the designated application period. This requirement ensures that the limited resources are distributed fairly and efficiently, prioritizing those who demonstrate an urgent need for assistance.
By adhering to a first-come, first-served approach, the Human Services Department aims to tackle the pressing financial challenges faced by individuals and families in a prompt and equitable manner.
The specific date for opening the relief payment applications has not been announced at this time.
