Ships Moved, Personnel Sheltering in Place
Authorities warned residents on the remote island who don’t live in completely concrete houses to consider migrating because a number of homes there are made of wood and tin.
Over a third of the island, which serves as a key center for US activities in the Pacific, is under the control of the Department of Defense.
The storm, which would be Tuesday night in the continental United States, might impact southern Guam at about noon on Wednesday, according to the forecast service.
Guam, which is 3,800 miles (6,115 kilometers) to the west of the International Date Line, is one day ahead of the US mainland and Hawaii. The capital of the Philippines, Manila, is located 1,600 miles (2,575 km) to the west.
