Experts have warned that a wave of AI-Powered misinformation might affect the elections in Britain and the US next year as deep fake videos, text, and images generated by AI-powered propaganda bots spread online.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, which developed ChatGPT, stated last week in a congressional hearing in Washington that the models underlying the most recent generation of AI technology could deceive consumers.
UK Takes the Lead in Tackling AI-Powered Risks
Rishi Sunak, the prime minister, declared on Thursday that the UK would take the lead in reducing the risks posed by AI.
After advances in generative AI, where software like ChatGPT and Midjourney can generate convincing text, visuals, and even voice on demand, worries about the technology have increased.
ChatGPT and other technologies raise the possibility of interactive election influence at scale, whereas prior waves of propaganda bots relied on straightforward pre-written texts sent in bulk or buildings full of paid trolls to conduct the hard task of communicating with other humans.

Alarm Raised on AI’s Manipulative Potential
An AI that has been programmed to recite talking points on Taiwan, climate change, or LGBT+ rights might persuade observers while engaging political opponents in pointless debates across thousands of social media accounts simultaneously.
The UK’s Alan Turing Institute’s head of foundation AI research, Prof. Michael Wooldridge, said his biggest concern with the technology was AI-driven misinformation.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI and developer of ChatGPT, issued a warning about the dangers of user manipulation in the newest generation of AI models on Tuesday earlier this week.
He said, “The general potential of these models to manipulate and convince, to deliver one-on-one interactive disinformation is a huge area of worry,” underscoring the need for regulation, public education, and openness around the use of AI.
Disinformation fueled by AI was cited by Professor Michael Wooldridge of the Alan Turing Institute as his top concern with the technology. He stated that industrial-scale disinformation production is a capability of generative AI.
“We have elections approaching in the UK and the US, and we know that social media is an extraordinarily potent channel for disinformation. However, we now know that generative AI can manufacture disinformation on an industrial scale. Right now, that is the top concern I have with AI.’
