CDC Confirms Effectiveness of Two-Dose Vaccine Against Mpox

The CDC’s new study confirms JYNNEOS’ two-dose vaccine is highly effective against Mpox during a potential summer outbreak.

The study revealed that a single dose of the JYNNEOS vaccine had a 75% effectiveness rate, while a two-dose regimen showed 86% effectiveness. This research, published on Thursday, encompassed immunocompromised patients. Among this group, a single dose demonstrated 51% effectiveness, while two doses were 70.2% effective.

Mpox Outbreak Statistics

Officials from the health agency emphasized the significance of administering vaccinations to vulnerable populations in light of the study’s findings. This was particularly important for individuals who had received their initial dose before summer and needed to receive a second dose.

According to the report, as of March 31, there were approximately 31,000 cases of Mpox and 42 deaths related to the disease since the outbreak began last year. During the peak of the health crisis, the number of cases sometimes doubled on a weekly basis.

Health experts argue that anyone who has had direct contact with an infected individual is at risk of contracting the disease, regardless of their sexual orientation. Officials pointed out that the outbreak primarily affected men who have sex with men, encompassing individuals who identify as gay, bisexual, transgender, and non-binary.

The CDC’s new study confirms JYNNEOS’ two-dose vaccine is highly effective against Mpox during a potential summer outbreak.

Last year, the FDA issued an emergency authorization for the use of the two-dose JYNNEOS vaccine among high-risk adults. The recommended interval between the two shots is typically four weeks.

However, during the outbreak, officials administered only one shot to partially vaccinate a larger number of people.

The CDC reported that approximately 1.2 million vaccine doses have been administered thus far. However, only 23% of the United States’ most vulnerable population has completed their vaccination.

Despite the apparent efficacy of the JYNNEOS vaccine against Mpox, numerous unanswered questions remain due to its limited use prior to the outbreak. The conducted studies were not randomized controlled trials and some were conducted on a relatively small scale.

Further work and research are necessary for health officials to determine the effectiveness of the JYNNEOS vaccine among immunocompromised individuals and the duration of its protective effects. Additionally, they need to assess whether the administration method of the vaccine impacts its efficacy.
