Russia-Ukraine war: Two Russian commanders dead in Eastern Ukraine combat

Two Russian commanders were killed in eastern Ukraine on Sunday, as Kyiv promised its long-awaited counteroffensive would free captured regions.

Ukraine has pledged that its long-awaited counteroffensive will liberate captured portions of the nation. Then, on Sunday, May 14, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that two senior Russian military commanders were slain in eastern Ukraine.

According to a statement issued by Russian authorities on Sunday, they are effectively repelling Ukrainian attacks near the contested town of Bakhmut. However, they acknowledged that senior military officers had been slain in action.

The ministry stated in a Politico article that Colonel Vyacheslav Makarov, commander of the 4th motorized rifle brigade, commanded the battle firsthand from the front. The third attempt was repelled, but the commander of the brigade was fatally wounded and perished while his men were being evacuated.

The ministry added that the corps’ deputy commander, Colonel Yevgeny Brovko, was reportedly among the deceased.

During a Sunday morning meeting in Berlin, the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, stated that his nation is preparing for a large counteroffensive. He refuted all allegations that Ukraine intends to attack Russian forces deep within the neighboring country.

He stated that the Ukraine requires and is awaiting the resources to initiate an attack on Russian territory because they lacked the time and strength to do so.

The Ukrainian leader stated, “We are preparing a counterattack against illegally occupied territories based on our constitutionally defined and internationally recognized legitimate borders.”

Two Russian commanders were killed in eastern Ukraine on Sunday, as Kyiv promised its long-awaited counteroffensive would free captured regions.

Despite the fact that the two parties have been in a stalemate for weeks, Ukraine claims to have made significant territorial gains near Bakhmut in recent days.

The besieged city has also witnessed a widening rift between rival Russian factions tasked with prosecuting Moscow’s war.

In a series of increasingly combative videos, Wagner Group boss and prominent oligarch Yevgeny Prigozhin lashed out at Russian military leaders, claiming that they fail to provide ammunition to his fighters on the front line and that top generals are attempting to “deceive” President Vladimir Putin about the situation on the ground.

Russian authorities argued that army movements near Bakhmut amounted to nothing more than a strategic repositioning. However, Prigozhin was enraged and stated that the front line “unfortunately is called a rout and not a regrouping.”
