Russia Military in Ukraine: UK’s report, insufficient training led to military deployment and reliance on outdated equipment

British intelligence chiefs claim that Russia forces in Ukraine are becoming increasingly reliant on obsolete technology.

In the latest intelligence update from the Ministry of Defence in the UK, it has been stated that the Russian military primarily consists of poorly trained mobilized reservists, and many of their units are severely understaffed.

Structure of Russia Invasion Force in Ukraine

Since the beginning of the invasion in February 2022, the Russian military in Ukraine has significantly weakened. The structure of the Russian invasion force in Ukraine, the Combined Grouping of Forces (CGF), has not changed in 446 days.

Almost 200,000 people are still believed to be part of the CGF, which is split into five Groups of Forces made up of about 70 combat units and brigades. The CGF, however, has restrictions while conducting air operations.

Previously, in February 2022, the force mainly consisted of professional soldiers who were equipped with relatively modern vehicles and had undergone regular training exercises, aiming for complex and coordinated operations.

Presently, the force is mostly comprised of poorly trained mobilized reservists who heavily rely on outdated equipment, leading to many units being understaffed. Their operations are typically simple and infantry-based.

Importantly, it is unlikely that the CGF has been able to establish a large, capable, and mobile reserve force to effectively address emerging operational challenges. Therefore, it is improbable that this organization can effectively coordinate significant military actions along the 1,200 km front line during times of stress.

In related news, there are reports that long-range missiles supplied by the UK have allegedly targeted industrial sites in a Ukrainian city controlled by Russia. Ukrainian aircraft have reportedly launched attacks on a chemical plant and a meat factory in Luhansk using Storm Shadow missiles, as claimed by Russia.

On Thursday, the UK became the first country to officially declare its provision of long-range missiles to Kyiv, as the conflict enters a crucial stage.

Furthermore, on Saturday, Ukrainian forces compelled Russian soldiers to retreat in a disorganized manner from the southern flank of Bakhmut, where a full-frontal operation was initiated by Russia a year ago.

This disorganized withdrawal signals a severe lack of reliable fighting forces, according to British military intelligence.

This supports earlier this week’s reports from the Ukrainian military that the 72nd Separate Motor Rifle Brigade of Russia had evacuated from their positions, allowing the Ukrainian forces to retake one kilometer of the terrain around the strategic city.
