IRS Appointments: Tips for getting through and finding the best time to call

When tax season arrives, individuals must have a thorough understanding of how to interact personally with the IRS.

Frequently, they do not know how to contact them over the phone in order to schedule an appointment. Although there are other, much simpler ways to contact them, knowing when and how to call must also be a consideration.

There are other ways to obtain the information you require from the IRS; after creating an IRS account and conducting research on their website, check to see if you can obtain the information you require. 

Additionally, you can request that a member of their team call you or your personal accountant.

However, if your situation is too complicated for the IRS’s available automated processes, calling is your best option.

Do not call to inquire about tax law, transcript requests, forms, the status of your refund, or to complain that your taxes are too high.

If you have an advanced warning or are going to be late, give us a ring. If the “Where’s My Refund?” tool suggests calling the IRS or if you need more information about your tax settlement, you should do so. The hotline can also be used to inquire about the progress of an action or payment arrangements.

Finally, you can call if you have any questions about your payment, if you never received your Form W-2 or Form 1099-R, or if you need to verify that your payment has been received.

Calling 800-829-1040 is for individuals, while 800-829-4933 is for business owners. If you are deaf or hard of hearing, please call 800-829-4059.

Monday through Friday, the phone lines are open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. (your local time). Residents of Hawaii and Alaska should observe Pacific time.

The time in Puerto Rico is 8:00 a.m. local time. As a helpful hint, you should call as early in the morning as possible. 

This is the time when agents are less busy with other calls, and your attempt will be processed more quickly than at other times.
