South Dakota’s Deputy Director of Medical Services informed the Board of Social Services that 22,000 Medicaid members may qualify again.
Since the public health emergency caused by the coronavirus has ended and continuous Medicaid enrollment ended in March, the state is reducing eligibility as a result.
Medicaid Renewal Date in South Dakota?
Funding for this provision came from the first federal coronavirus relief package in 2020, which temporarily forbade states from cleaning their its enrollment lists.
The Social Services Department in South Dakota has begun unwinding. You may lose your health coverage as early as April 1, 2023, if the government agency decides you are no longer qualified for Medicaid or CHIP.
A renewal form must be filled out. You can either mail or drop off the completed form at your local office.
Changes in any of the following areas may alter your eligibility for CHIP in recent years:
- Your earnings
- The total number of people who share your home
- Your level of impairment
- If you were released from a prison, long-term care facility, or mental health facility
- If you moved and did not update your contact information
It’s important to remember that this health coverage expansion in South Dakota will go into force on July 1, 2023, even though some people may lose coverage as a result of the unraveling.
There will be a significant increase in the number of South Dakota adults eligible for this coverage as a result of this move.

Reapplying For The Health Coverage
A notice of non-renewal will be sent to you by mail if your South Dakota Medicaid coverage is canceled.
You must reapply for Medicaid if you have previously received benefits but now believe you still qualify.
