Authorities in California have charged a sexual assault suspect in connection with multiple assaults on and around the UC Berkeley campus.
In a Tuesday alert, Berkeley Police did not reveal the suspect’s identity, describing the case as complex and still under investigation.
California Suspect’s alleged actions
Tuesday, however, Palo Alto Police announced the arrest of Daniel Widyanto Condronimpuno, 34, of Palm Beach, Florida, with assistance from the University of California Police Department (UCPD) on the Berkeley campus in relation to a sexual assault in Palo Alto.
Two days prior to Condronimpuno’s arrest, 911 dispatchers in Palo Alto, southwest of Berkeley, received a call from a passerby reporting that he had found a woman in the California Avenue pedestrian underpass who claimed she had just been sexually assaulted there.
The victim, a fifty-year-old woman, alleged that the suspect struck her in the head, causing her to fall to the ground, and then sexually assaulted her. He then allegedly stole her cell phone before fleeing.
On the Berkeley campus on April 5 and 9, the UCPD received reports of two separate sexual assaults in which the suspect grabbed a female student’s private body parts over their clothing.
Charges against Condronimpuno
UCPD thanked those in the community who have come forward to report encounters with the sexual battery suspect described in several previous campus alerts, adding that additional crimes of a similar nature have been reported in the last week.
The most recent sexual assault reportedly occurred just after midnight on Tuesday on the UCB campus, when the suspect grabbed a woman from behind and struck her on the head, but she managed to escape.
According to a press release, Palo Alto Police are withholding the suspect’s photo because other law enforcement agencies still have active investigations involving this same suspect, and the premature release of his photo could impede their investigations.
Condronimpuno is charged with attempted rape by force, sexual penetration by force, assault with the intent to commit rape, forcible sexual battery, false imprisonment, felony battery, assault with a deadly weapon, robbery, and preventing someone from using a wireless communication device to call for help.
The authorities are requesting that anyone with information regarding the incidents contact the UCPD at 510-642-6760.
