NASA has revealed the next generation of astronauts who will fly around the moon next year

NASA announced Monday that four astronauts will slingshot around the moon next year to prepare for the agency’s long-awaited moon return.

NASA astronauts Christina Hammock Koch, Victor Glover, Reid Wiseman, and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen have been named as the crew for the upcoming Artemis II mission, which is scheduled to launch in 2024. The announcement was made during a ceremony held in Houston.

At the ceremony, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson stated, “The Artemis II crew represents tens of thousands of people working tirelessly to get us to the stars.” “This is their personnel. This is our crew, the crew of humanity.”

After more than fifty years, the astronauts will be the first humans to fly in the vicinity of the moon. In addition, they will be the first to launch on NASA’s next-generation mega rocket and Orion spacecraft.

The crew will not land on the moon but will test the performance of the Orion spacecraft as it orbits the moon before returning to Earth.

NASA has stated that, if successful, the subsequent Artemis III mission will land on the moon with a crew consisting of the first woman and the first person of color to set foot on the lunar surface.

Wiseman will serve as the flight commander for Artemis II. In 2009, he was selected as a NASA astronaut after serving as a test pilot for the navy. In 2014, he embarked on a 165-day mission aboard the International Space Station as a member of the Expedition 41 crew.

NASA announced Monday that four astronauts will slingshot around the moon next year to prepare for the agency’s long-awaited moon return.

NASA reported that Glover, a former U.S. Navy, will pilot the mission. He was
Astronaut selected in 2013 who previously flew on the second crewed mission of SpaceX’s.

On the Artemis II mission, Koch and Hansen will serve as mission specialists. Koch, who became an astronaut in 2013, will break the record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman in 2020, after spending a total of 328 days aboard the International Space Station. She also participated in the first all-female spacewalk during that mission.

In 2009, the Canadian Space Agency selected Hansen to become an astronaut. The former fighter pilot was the first Canadian to visit the moon. As part of NASA’s efforts to return to the moon, Artemis II will be the first fully-crewed test flight.

The agency launched its massive Space Launch System rocket and Orion capsule on an unmanned mission to the moon last year, where the spacecraft spent several weeks in lunar orbit before returning to Earth.

The Artemis I flight included mannequins equipped with sensors that monitored mission conditions and radiation levels throughout the flight. The Artemis program is named after the Greek goddess Artemis, who was Apollo’s twin sister. Before venturing to Mars, NASA plans to launch regular missions to establish a base camp on the lunar surface.
