Brazilian teacher stabbed to death by student, who was inspired by other gruesome crimes

A Brazilian teacher was fatally stabbed in a school attack in which three other teachers and two students were injured.

Officials in Sao Paulo, Brazil, have identified a 13-year-old student as the perpetrator of the knife attack, which occurred at the Thomazia Montoro public school at approximately 7:20am local time (10:20 GMT) on Monday.

Tarcisio Gomes de Freitas, the governor of Sao Paulo state, announced on Twitter that the suspect had been apprehended. No motive has been determined at this time.

Three days of mourning have been declared in Tenreiro’s honor. According to officials, the injured teachers and students are being treated at four local hospitals.

Sao Paulo’s Secretary of Public Safety, Guilherme Derrite, praised the “heroic acts” of a physical education instructor who “immobilized” the teen suspect, thereby preventing “a greater tragedy.”

In an interview with the Associated Press, a 13-year-old student from the school stated that Tenreiro had been involved in a fight between the suspect and another student the previous week.

Monday morning, the student reported that the suspect wore a skull mask and stabbed the instructor from behind.

The Brazilian newspaper Folha reported that the suspect used the Twitter handle “Taucci” to make an apparent reference to the March 2019 school shooting in Suzano, on the outskirts of Sao Paulo.

Former students Guilherme Taucci Monteiro, 17, and Luiz Henrique de Castro, 25, opened fire at the Raul Brasil State School, killing five students and two school employees before committing suicide. ten additional students were injured.

Suspect Inspired By 1999 School Masssacre

Later, investigators determined that Monteiro and Castro were inspired by the 1999 Columbine High School massacre in the United States, which at the time was the deadliest school shooting in that nation’s history.

Since then, shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School (2012), Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School (2018), and Robb Elementary School (2022) have surpassed them.

On the same day as the attack in Brazil, an additional school shooting occurred in Nashville, Tennessee, on Monday morning.

In this attack, six people, including three children, were killed. Monday’s incident in Brazil comes nearly one month after a 16-year-old French student fatally stabbed a teacher in southwestern France.

The 13-year-old suspect in the stabbing attack in Sao Paulo, according to Brazilian officials, had conducted online research on firearm purchases prior to the incident.
