LaGuardia: How America’s worst airport became the best in the world?

While all eyes in New Jersey were on the massive renovation of Terminal A at Newark Liberty International Airport, another renovation was underway. LaGuardia Airport was updating Terminal B.

You are now aware that our new Terminal A at Newark Airport cost $3 billion. It was a costly endeavor. The first day was a nightmare. After so many delays, it began with passengers missing flights due to long check-in lines at stations that had wiring problems.

World’s Best Airport

According to Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton, there was one common refrain that fueled the multibillion-dollar renovations at New York’s LaGuardia, JFK, and Newark airports.

The new terminal’s design philosophy is “about giving guests choice,” whether it’s a business traveler who needs to get to a gate quickly or a family who wants to “sit and relax and be entertained.”

A light rail link from Manhattan to LaGuardia Airport was scrapped on Monday, but there’s always JFK’s $9.5 billion makeover to look forward to. More of the world’s best airports that inspired New York’s facelift can be found in the World’s Best Airports of 2023.

LaGuardia Terminal B

The 1.3 million-square-foot LaGuardia Terminal B, which opened in stages beginning in 2018 and is expected to be completed in 2022, offers customers a world-class experience with spacious interiors, floor-to-ceiling windows, a 3,000-car parking garage, new covered and convenient pickup facilities for both taxis and ride-sharing vehicles, and dual sky bridges above active taxiways. 

The terminal features world-class retail, extensive dining options, stunning art and amenities, and a water feature that is unlike any other airport in the world. Customers truly enjoy a world-class 21st-century travel experience from curb to gate.

Aside from the 5-Star rating, LaGuardia Airport and Terminal B have each received numerous awards for excellence, including UNESCO’s Prix Versailles, Airports, in 2021, as the best new airport in the world; the National Academy of Construction’s Special Achievement Award; the NYC & Company Foundation’s “Visionaries and Voices” award; and awards from the Urban Land Institute New York and the Design-Build Institute of America, among others.
