Houston police seek for a man who robbed a woman and left her paralyzed

The assault that happened in the 9800 block of Bellaire, Houston on February 13 left Nhung Truong, 44, with a severe spinal cord injury.

Vietnamese woman Nhung Truong, 44, a mother of three, went to the Bank of America at 9875 Blackhawk Boulevard to withdraw a significant sum of money for a trip.

She then drove 24 miles to the 9800 block of Bellaire, where the robbery occurred at roughly 11:30 am on February 13.

Truong can be seen strolling past a mall when a man approaches her from behind and snatches her, causing her to drop her possessions. The man then snatches what he believes to be a money envelope and flees.

But when he learns he grabbed the incorrect thing, he goes back and picks up Truong before throwing her to the ground. The actual envelope containing the money is then taken, and he leaves the area.

In 2021, there were 22,320 robberies in Texas, down from 26,750 in 2020, according to data from the Texas Department of Public Safety. A 16.6 percent decrease may be seen in the change.

According to the public safety department, Texas’ crime rate for robberies dropped by 17% from 2020 to 75.6 robberies per 100,000 residents in 2021.

During the assault, the robber body-slammed Truong at one point and left her on the ground, according to surveillance video.

As a result of the assault, Truong’s spinal cord was damaged, and she is now paraplegic and unable to walk or go to the restroom by herself. The single mother now uses a wheelchair and is supported by her three in-school children, who are aged 13, 15, and 20.

Suspect Remains At Large

The money had been saved up so she could travel to see family in Vietnam, according to family members who informed the network that the man stole roughly $4,300 from them.

The family informed the network that the prognosis for Truong’s full recovery is only 50% according to the physicians. Police describe the suspect, a Black man in his early 20s, as having a slim build, measuring between 5’8 and 5’9 in height, and weighing roughly 140 pounds.
