What happened to my tax refund? These are the five reasons why your payment is late!

Most taxpayers can anticipate receiving their tax refund two weeks after filing their federal taxes.

Why My Tax Refund Is Delayed?

According to the IRS, however, a number of factors might cause your return to be delayed, so it’s critical to understand when this may occur and how to avoid a delay.

1. You submitted a paper return

Around 90% of tax returns are filed online. Paper returns must mostly be manually examined. Despite efforts by the IRS to digitize and scan paper returns, they still take more time to evaluate and process.

2. You filed an amended return

You must file an amended tax return if you receive an updated tax form or if your circumstances change after your return has been filed and processed. You can file an updated return electronically if you are revising a tax return from 2020, 2021, or 2022 tax seasons. Paper and electronically filed revised returns are processed in around 20 weeks.

3. You filed an injured spouse claim

If your tax refund was lowered to pay off your spouse’s debt, you can submit an injured spouse claim to recover your share of the refund provided you were not responsible for the problem.

Past-due child support, federal agency debts, state income tax responsibilities, and state unemployment compensation debts are typically admissible for an injured spouse claim.

4. You applied for a taxpayer identification number (ITIN) with your return

To submit taxes, taxpayers must have a tax identification number; normally, a Social Security number suffices. You can apply for an ITIN if you do not have a Social Security number.

5. You requested a refund of tax withheld using Form 1042-S

If you are a foreign person with U.S. income, you may need to file Form 1042-S, and any refund due may take up to six months.

How To Receive Yours On Time?

Most taxpayers can anticipate receiving their tax refund two weeks after filing their federal taxes.

If you rely on your return, file early and online, and request refunds by direct transfer to avoid delays. Even though the IRS has recently introduced certain adjustments to speed up the process, paper returns sometimes take longer to process.

If you have the corresponding routing and account numbers, you can have your refund deposited to a bank account, prepaid debit card, or mobile app.

Prepare all of your personal information and tax documents before filing your return, whether online or with a tax expert. Returns with errors or missing information may need an additional inspection, causing your refund to be delayed.

Make sure you have your spouse’s and dependents’ personal information, such as birth dates and Social Security or taxpayer identification numbers. You’ll also need this year’s Identity Protection Personal Identification Number if you received one from the IRS.
