The Texas sheriff’s office has promised an inquiry into the ‘apparent’ genuine mistake that led to the inmate’s release.
Officials say they have taken back into custody a man who was mistakenly freed from jail on Wednesday and is serving a 25-year prison sentence in Harris County, Texas.
Texas Sheriff’s Office Issues Statement
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office is searching for Marcelo Perez Campos, age 61, who was mistakenly released from jail due to an administrative error.
On February 20, 2023, Campos was sentenced to 25 years in jail for the violent assault of a family member. Since receiving a prison sentence, Campos has been imprisoned at the Harris County Jail.
At about 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, after Campos had been erroneously released from jail, the sheriff’s office took to social media to ask for the public’s assistance in finding him.
Campos was found and taken back to the Harris County Jail shortly before 2 a.m. on Thursday, according to a tweet from the sheriff’s office.
The sheriff’s office has promised to look into the circumstances surrounding Campos’s mistaken release in order to establish whether any policies or procedures were broken.

Mistake Blamed On Computer Malfunction
In March of 2022, a computer error resulted in the automatic release of more than 300 defendants from the Harris County Jail.
The approximate rate Magistrate Courtney St. Julian as claiming that from 7 p.m. on March 24, 2022, to 9 p.m. on March 26, 2022, Jweb, a system utilized by prosecutors in criminal cases, was down and more than 280 detained defendants did not obtain probable cause hearings during this period.
A probable cause hearing must be held for the accused within 48 hours after their arrest. This resulted in the release of about 300 defendants.
All of the defendants were given unconditional releases after bond hearings, regardless of the severity of their charges.
Harris County’s district attorney had previously stated that anyone released would be promptly re-arrested and brought before a judge to determine whether or not there was probable cause for their initial arrest.
