A nanny in California was given a sentence that ranged from 25 years to life in prison without the chance of parole after she acknowledged shaking a couple’s 4-week-old infant and then eating lunch while he lay dying.
During her sentencing on Tuesday in San Diego, 40-year-old Victoria Fox expressed through her public defender that she was very regretful for her actions.
Victoria Fox’s Apology
The timeline of events provided by the prosecution in the sentencing records, which stated that Fox violently shook Phoenix, tossed him on the bed twice, and squeezed him because he wouldn’t stop sobbing, contrasts sharply with her remorse in court.
The incident occurred in August 2021 when Phoenix’s parents came from Singapore to San Diego for the birth of twins through surrogacy because the pair had trouble becoming pregnant, including unsuccessful IVF attempts.
Unidentified Singaporean parents hired Fox, 40, to monitor their son Grove while they were present for the surrogate delivery of their twins. The couple leased an Airbnb in San Diego and brought their oldest son, a babysitter, and Grove along to wait for the delivery.
Fox was an obvious choice when the couple chose to hire a second nanny because they were expecting twins. According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, Grove, who was abandoned by Fox when she was just four weeks old, passed quite terribly and tragically on August 21, 2021.
The case was described as horrific by San Diego Superior Court Judge Daniel Goldstein during Fox’s sentencing hearing on March 1. Fox stood sternly in court while communicating her deep regret through her public attorney. She showed no emotion at the punishment hearing.
Infant’s Cause Of Death, Revealed
As per reports, Fox told authorities that she had been worn out when she made the forceful attempt to stop the baby’s cries. The enraged nanny threw Grove into the bed, squeezed her harder than she had ever squeezed a child, and then shook her before throwing her away once more.
Grove’s mother informed her via texts that he was not eating much and was experiencing problems with gas over the course of several hours. Fox enquired about the mother’s experience at about 2:00 pm.
Grove was said to have died as a result of injuries received when Fox tossed, pinned, and shaken him on a bed, according to police and prosecutors. Phoenix passed away a day or two after his injuries, according to Ramona McCarthy, Deputy District Attorney for San Diego County.
He sustained severe brain injuries, severe subdural hemorrhaging, and a shattered femur, but blunt-force trauma was the cause of his death.
