On Monday, an explosion at an Ohio metals plant spilled molten metal and debris on nearby buildings, injuring at least 14 people, largely with burns.
The explosion sent smoke billowing into the air, which could be seen for miles surrounding the destroyed factory located around 15 miles (24 kilometers) southeast of Cleveland.
1 Dead After Explosion in Ohio Factory
Northeast Ohio’s fire agencies responded to the explosion at the I. Schumann & Co. metals company in Bedford.
Captain Brian DiRocco of the Oakwood Fire Department addressed the reporters, stating that thirteen people were sent to the hospital, many with burn injuries, and one was being treated on-site.
At least one victim was in critical condition, and one victim was rescued from the rubble. DiRocco stated that all of the injuries were on-site, and falling debris spared neighboring companies.
DiRocco stated that he had previously assessed the site and determined it to be safe, save for the fact that it is a foundry. When working with molten metal, the inherent hazard is always present.
Officials of the company that manufactures copper, brass, and bronze permits could not be reached immediately for comment. The company has been in operation since 1917, according to its website.

Shower of Molten Debris
Matthew Wiggins, the owner of the neighboring business Rose Colored Gaming, reported that he heard a large explosion followed by large amounts of debris striking the roof within a few seconds.
Items were tumbling off of the walls and bookcases. When we entered the front yard, we observed what appeared to be molten rocks and metal. a massive quantity of smoke. Wiggins stated that a fire was emanating from the building across the street.
Joseph Sarconi, a second witness, stated that he was enjoying lunch in his car across the street when he heard at least two explosions that demolished a brick wall surrounding the property.
The street was traversed by a beam. Sarconi stated that the other beam flew across the street and shattered our glass. Exciting but dreadful
The explosion occurred approximately 70 miles (112 kilometers) to the north-northwest of East Palestine, Ohio, where a train carrying dangerous chemicals derailed earlier this month, creating a fire that prompted thousands of residents to evacuate.
