Michigan State University shooting: A 43-year-old suspect was discovered dead after shooting several victims

More details about the man suspected of opening fire inside two buildings on the Michigan State University campus Monday night have been made public by Michigan State Police.

At 8:18 pm, shots were fired inside Berkey Hall, which is located on the northern edge of the East Lansing campus, according to MSU. People on and around campus took cover as police searched for the shooter because, as of 9:20 pm, they believed the shooter was on foot.

MSU Shooting Suspect

Nearly an hour after the first shooting, just before 9:30, police reported a second shooting at the nearby MSU Union. At an update at 11 pm, MSU Deputy Police Chief Chris Rozman stated that they were only looking for one suspect, who had been last seen on foot on the MSU Union’s north side.

Just as MSU Police were preparing another update at midnight, FOX 2 learned from sources that the suspect was dead near Lake Lansing Road and Larch Street in Lansing, approximately 4 miles from the MSU Union.

Students were placed on lockdown after surveillance images revealed a suspect wearing a denim jacket, red shoes, and a cap on the loose. In the senseless attack, three people were shot to death and five others were rushed to the hospital.

Later, police confirmed that the 43-year-old man in the surveillance images, who was not affiliated with the university, had committed suicide by shooting himself.

Five additional victims were transported to Sparrow Hospital, where their conditions remain critical. Officials have not yet confirmed whether the victims are students or whether they have been identified.

The Michigan State Police also issued a statement urging people to stay off campus while rescue efforts are underway.

Additionally, the Detroit division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives was on campus, and all university activities for the next 48 hours have been canceled.

The news comes one day before the five-year anniversary of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

Former student Nikolas Cruz opened fire on the faculty and students, killing 17 and injuring another 17. Cruz entered a guilty plea and was ultimately given 34 consecutive sentences of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
