$2,400 Utility Assistance for Texas resident: Are you qualified?

The Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA) announced that it is assisting homeowners and renters to pay their past due utility bills, providing thousands of Texas residents with some assistance as they battle the bitter cold of this winter.

Residents of Texas will receive assistance with their propane, natural gas, water, wastewater, and electricity bills thanks to the Texas Utility Help (TUH) program, which will award participants who are eligible for up to $2,400 in additional prospective payments.

An applicant who is eligible will now have his past-due bills paid and will receive an additional $85 per month towards his future water and wastewater bills as a result of an update. 

The update was made possible because the program now offers assistance with future payments.

The TDHCA encourages anyone who is interested in applying for this program to do so as soon as they can in order to maximize their potential benefits, as the application period for this program will continue until September 30, 2023.

Claimant households must have an annual income that is equal to or less than 150% of the federal poverty income guidelines and must include at least one person who is either a legal resident of the United States or a citizen of the United States.

For Hampton Roads Residents

The Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA) announced that it is assisting homeowners and renters to pay their past due utility bills.

In addition, residents of Hampton Roads who are struggling to pay their water and wastewater bills still have the opportunity to get assistance with those bills.

Funding is available for households through the Low Income Household Water Assistance Program until September 30 or until funds are exhausted. The federally funded program was designed to provide eligible households with a one-time payment up to $2,500 equal to the amount of past-due bills. 

Residents must have an unpaid water or wastewater balance and a gross household income that is less than 150% of the federal poverty level, depending on the size of their household, in order to be eligible for LIHWAP assistance.

A household will also be eligible for the water assistance program if it is enrolled in one of the following programs: Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), or veteran programs.
