The fight for abortion rights is not finished, declared US President Joe Biden on Sunday, 50 years after a historic Supreme Court ruling protected that right until the court reversed its decision in June.
The Democratic president stated on Twitter that today should have been the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, alluding to the original verdict.
US War Against Women’s Rights
Instead, MAGA Republican leaders who support former president Donald Trump and his Make America Great Again slogan are waging war against the right of women to make their own healthcare decisions.
Since the Supreme Court overturned the Roe v. Wade decision, a reversal made possible by the votes of three conservative judges selected by Trump, twenty states led by Republicans have passed legislation prohibiting or severely restricting abortion rights.
Biden added: I will never stop working to safeguard the reproductive rights of women.
Approximately 300 women demonstrated for abortion rights in New York City on Sunday, chanting slogans such as Abortion is a woman’s right.
During a weekend of competing demonstrations from opposing sides of a heated national debate, the weekend also featured demonstrations from both sides of The phrase my body, my choice was heard at the time of the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision.
In a speech in Tallahassee, Florida, Vice President Kamala Harris echoed the need to safeguard abortion rights.
How could they? she exclaimed indignantly before a throng of pro-abortion supporters.
She criticized recent abortion-restricting laws approved by extremists, especially in Florida, and added, We will not back down.

Abortion Movement
Florida officially prohibits abortions beyond 15 weeks, with no exceptions for incest or rape. The state’s Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, is a rising star on the American right.
According to Planned Parenthood, an advocate for abortion and provider of women’s health services, one in three American women now reside in a state with significant restrictions on abortion.
At the gathering with Harris, the group’s president, McGill Johnson, stated, While what’s happening to patients and providers is awful, our movement is energizing.
In this area, Biden’s influence is rather limited, as the issue is primarily being fought at the state level. And anti-abortion groups, backed by the religious right, have not eased their pressure.
On Friday, thousands of people marched throughout the nation to demand a nationwide ban on abortion. Biden stated in a series of tweets on Sunday that a woman’s right to choose is non-negotiable and urged Congress to enact legislation codifying the Roe case’s abortion rights.
However, given that Republicans control the House of Representatives, the lower body of Congress, such legislation has almost no chance of passing.
Since June, Biden has been restricted to issuing relatively limited orders, such as allowing VA hospitals to provide abortion services. The White House also seeks to maintain access to tablets containing mifepristone, which can be used to terminate an early pregnancy.
