Apple tips: How to unlock a dead owner’s device?

If a friend or family member you care about has passed away, you could be trying to get access to their Apple device to retrieve any personal information they may have left behind. It is annoying not to know the passcode to easily access information, whether you are looking for images, passwords, or other data.

This initial step will only be successful if the deceased owner of the device backed up data to iCloud. Even though it’s simple to enable automatic backups, Apple users occasionally fail to do so, leading to photos and data only existing on a phone, tablet, or computer.

Apple Device Tips

Check to see whether you have the owner’s iCloud login if you don’t have access to their passcode or password. Try common passwords or check to see if they left a list of passwords since an iCloud login requires email.

You might be able to access a lot of data, including images, via iCloud.com if you have access to an iCloud password and they have backed up their data. Check to see if any of the owner’s devices automatically log into iCloud, and if not, proceed with the steps below.

Gaining Access To Info Using iCloud.com

Use a separate device to access iCloud.com. Doing this on a computer is recommended. Use the owner’s Apple ID to log in. You’ll probably be able to access the user’s Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Photos, Cloud Drive, Notes, Reminders, and a few other applications if they utilized them after successfully logging in. Direct photo downloads are available through iCloud.com. Check to see if the user’s login was automatically saved on any other devices, such as a different computer or tablet if you don’t have access to the user’s Apple ID but do have access to their email.

Accessing Data Using An Email

Visit iCloud.com on a different device; it is recommended that you use a computer for this. To reset your Apple ID or password, click the link. The iCloud email address of the user will be used to reset the password. The email with instructions on resetting an iCloud account should be visible when you open the user’s email account. Once you have the new login, go to iCloud.com and log in using it. Then, proceed as described above to access data using an iCloud account.

Legacy Contact

A legacy contact can be set up on your devices in the event of an untimely death, something many Apple customers may not be aware of. It should be relatively simple to access any legacy contact information that the device’s owner may have put up. Those using iOS 15.2, iPadOS 15.2, or macOS 12.1 or later can access legacy contacts. Visit Apple’s digital legacy to seek access if a legacy contact was established by a deceased loved one.

How To Setup?

  • Log into your iPhone’s Settings.
  • At the top of the page, tap your name.
  • “Password & Security” should be chosen.
  • Deciding on “Legacy Contact.”
  • Pick up to five people from your family or friends.
  • An access code will be sent to you. Print it out and save it securely with your other estate planning papers.
  • To access your account, your Digital Legacy connections will require both that code and a death certificate.
  • After you pass away, your legacy contacts can visit Apple’s website to seek access.
