SNAP benefits, sometimes known as food stamps, offer qualified New Mexico individuals with low income and limited resources cash assistance to purchase nutritious food.
The New Mexico Human Services Department distributes benefits weekly via EBT cards (HSD). In addition, beneficiaries can anticipate a 12.5% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) increase in January 2023.

An individual’s monthly gross income must be equal to or less than 130% of the federal poverty line in order to qualify for SNAP benefits. For instance, a family of three might survive in 2022 on $130 more than the $1,830 federal poverty line.
The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities estimates that a family of three earning about $28,550 per year may be eligible for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) payments.
In addition, once expenses are deducted, the net income must be at or below the poverty line. Finally, according to the CBPP, the family’s assets cannot exceed specified thresholds: $3,750 if there is a person age 60 or older or a person with a disability in the home; $2,500 or less if there are no such people in the home.
