Japan to develop long-range missile that could reach China, North Korea

The development of long-range missiles by Japan is apparently planned for the 2030s. The upcoming construction comes after the country’s largest military build-up in decades was recently revealed.

The Kyodo news agency reported on Saturday that Japan’s defense ministry is making preparations to create missiles with a range of 3,000 kilometers that may be ready for deployment in the 2030s.

Japan Plans To Deploy Missile By 2023

Tokyo plans to deploy a missile with a range of 2,000 kilometers by the early 2030s and a hypersonic missile with a range of 3,000 kilometers capable of reaching any target in North Korea and parts of China by 2035.

The proposed construction follows the announcement of the nation’s largest military buildup since World War II.

In light of regional tensions and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the $327 billion plan calls for the acquisition of China-capable missiles.

The defense budget was authorized by the cabinet of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida last month as part of a substantial $863 billion budget beginning in April 2019. The increased budget was partially attributable to the government’s new National Security Plan, which includes increased defense spending.

Japan’s new defense spending goal is consistent with NATO norms and will eventually boost the country’s annual budget to $73 billion, making it the third-largest military spender after the United States and China.

The plan described China’s expanding military buildup, its rivalry with the United States, and its heightened military activity near Taiwan as the biggest strategic challenge to the peace and security of Japan and the international community.

Japan asserts that having the ability to launch a counterattack is constitutionally required in the event of an imminent attack by an adversary.

However, according to analysts, it is difficult to execute such an operation without being accused of initiating hostilities. Opponents assert that Japan’s attack capabilities exceed its post-World War II pacifist constitution.
