Gas Tax increases to $28.6 per gallon in Michigan as Gov. Gretchen Whitmer vows to improve residents’ lives

The gas tax in Michigan is increasing from 27.2 cents to 28.6 cents per gallon. Beginning in 2022, a state statute passed by former governor Rick Snyder causes the tax to increase yearly automatically. It increases annually by the lesser of 5% or the rate of inflation.

Gas Tax In Michigan To Increase by 5%

The gas tax will only increase by 5% in 2023 due to inflation in 2022, which was almost 8%. That equals 1.4 cents per gallon. The cost of the transaction will increase by 21 cents for every 15 gallons of gas.

Since the money from the tax goes toward repairing the roads, annual hikes were written into Michigan law to help the state keep up with its deteriorating infrastructure.

Before Snyder approved a new road funding deal to raise the tax and boost registration fees, Michigan lasted nearly 20 years without a gas tax rise.

The state gas tax in Michigan in 2022 was slightly more than the national average, at 26 cents per gallon. State gas taxes in Pennsylvania, California, and Washington are all 49 cents or more.

But Michiganders are subject to other gas taxes in addition to the 28.6 cent levy. Additionally, there is a 6% state sales tax, an 18.4 cent federal gas tax, and a 1 cent environmental protection regulation fee.

While many in the national media have speculated that Whitmer might run for president in 2024 if Democratic incumbent Joe Biden decides not to seek reelection, Whitmer recently told Bridge that she is committed to enthusiastically serving out the remainder of her second term.
