Nuclear fusion can produce clean energy in the future, US scientist claims

After more than half a century of nuclear fusion research, scientists have confirmed a significant breakthrough that could pave the way for an abundant supply of clean energy in the future.

Supply of Clean Energy

Researchers at the US National Ignition Facility in California said that fusion experiments had released more energy than the lab’s large, high-powered lasers had contributed, a momentous achievement known as ignition or energy gain.

Scientists hailed the discovery as confirmation that the power of the stars might be harnessed on Earth, despite the fact that the technology is not yet suitable for use in power plants and will not solve the climate crisis.

Obtaining electricity from a commercial fusion reactor is still years or even decades away, but that hasn’t prevented investors from pouring money into the industry.

After more than half a century of nuclear fusion research, scientists have confirmed a significant breakthrough that could pave the way for an abundant supply of clean energy in the future.

This year, private investment in fusion research is expected to surpass $1 billion, following a record $2.6 billion in 2021.

There are currently no publicly listed fusion companies. Bloomberg’s Global Nuclear Theme Peers index, which measures listed businesses with exposure to the industry, is expected to reach a staggering $40 trillion valuation one day. Rolls-Royce, Toshiba, Hitachi, and General Electric are among the more well-known brands.

The index of 64 nuclear stocks has increased by almost 100 percent over the past five years, compared to the MSCI World Index, which has increased by 38 percent over the same period.
