The deadline to submit an IRS Free File claim for any unclaimed stimulus payment or child tax credit was November 17. Don’t worry though; that money isn’t truly gone. Any money owed to you may still be claimed when you complete your taxes in 2023.
Approximately 9 million persons who were not paid this year never filed a tax return, either because they were exempt from filing or because they required more time. To identify who qualified for both of these payouts, the IRS used tax returns.

For those who used the IRS Free File program, the cutoff date for claiming unclaimed stimulus funds or child tax credits was November 17. For people who are usually exempt from filing taxes because of their lower income, there is a program called Free File.
If you needed more time to submit your taxes and are still required to, the deadline was October 17. That was the last day to file Form 1040 without incurring a penalty.
If you’ve been affected by recent natural disasters like Hurricane Ian, you have until February 15, 2023, to file a claim. However, if you live in a location where the Federal Emergency Management Agency has declared a disaster, such as Kentucky or Missouri, the submission deadline was Tuesday, November 15.

Missed The Date of Claiming Your Money?
Don’t panic if you missed one of the following deadlines to file a claim for unclaimed stimulus funds or payments related to the child tax credit. Even if you don’t get it this year, you can still deduct it when you submit your taxes in 2023.
In 2025, Tax Day will be the final deadline for filing a claim for reimbursement, but we would like to suggest filing as soon as possible.
If you filed your taxes for the year but have yet to receive your qualifying stimulus check or child tax credit monies, a few other reasons can be in effect.
- You don’t have a set-up bank account.
- You had never filed before.
- You reside in a mixed-status home.
- You haven’t changed your address with USPS or the IRS.
- You are currently without a house.
- You have limited or no internet connectivity.
