China’s JF-17 Jet Fighters
When it comes to the JF-17, China and Pakistan inked an agreement that stipulates Pakistan must go through Chinese mediation in order to get engines and spare components from Russia.
Difesa Online reports that Pakistan requested new RD-93 engines from Russia without going via China in order to fix the various problems with their Chinese fighter planes.
The RD-93 engines, together with spare parts and maintenance, were something Russia sought to give to the Pakistan Air Force, but US sanctions against Russia’s defense export agency, the Rosoboronexport, created additional difficulties. Pakistan Is Facing Problem With Russian RD-93
Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of the Chinese Nanjing Research Institute of Electronics Technology, the issue with the Russian RD-93 engines persists.
Issues have arisen for Pakistan due to its desire to negotiate directly with Russia over the maintenance and replacement of its Russian RD-93 engines; however, the agreement reached between Beijing and Islamabad stipulates that Pakistan can only obtain engines and spare parts from Russia via China’s mediation.
International sanctions against Russia’s defense export agency, the Rosoboronexport, have slowed down efforts to help Pakistan by providing spare parts and repair tools for the RD-93 engines.
The JF-17 fighter jets were supposed to be low-cost, lightweight, all-weather multi-role fighters like the Russian Su-30MKI or the French Mirage 2000, however, they have fallen short of those goals.
The Myanmar junta had to ground most of its newly acquired JF-17 Thunder jets earlier this year due to mechanical difficulties.
