SNAP benefits: Texas Health, Human Services Commission announce extension for emergency food assistance

The emergency Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, totaling more than $341.4 million, will be made available by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) in December, according to a statement from Governor Greg Abbott today.

All households will receive at least $95 in emergency allotments after HHSC gained approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to extend the maximum permissible amount of SNAP benefits to participants depending on family size. By December 31, this extra emergency allocation ought to be visible in recipients’ accounts.

Texas Extends Food Assistance

The unexpected December allocations are in addition to the more than $9 billion in payments already made to Texans since April 2020.

SNAP, a federal program administered by HHSC, offers food assistance to Texas residents who qualify and are low-income families or individuals.
