Stimulus update: One-time $800 payment going out in South Carolina

The majority of state stimulus payouts have already been distributed to qualified people as the year comes to an end. However, in a few states, payments will still be made in December.

This is especially beneficial for eligible recipients who incur extra costs around the holidays or at the end of the year. Here is a list of the states that sent stimulus checks in December, along with some clarifications on the who, what, and when of those payments.

South Carolina Stimulus Check

A stimulus check won’t be issued to the roughly 44% of South Carolinians who failed to pay their income taxes. You will receive your rebate at the end of the year if you filed your 2021 income tax return by October 17. You will get your refund in March 2023 if you submit it after the extension deadline of October 17 but before February 15, 2023.

Residents of South Carolina who submitted their 2021 tax returns by October 17 can anticipate tax refunds of up to $800, which should arrive this month.

A check in the mail or direct deposit will be used by residents to get their $800 rebates; the first round has already been distributed. More checks will be delivered in December.

The rebate is still available to taxpayers who haven’t filed their 2021 returns as long as they do so by February 15; however, they won’t get their checks until March of the following year. Depending on their 2021 tax liability, each taxpayer receives a different amount, up to a maximum of $800.

The South Carolina Department of Revenue defines tax liability as “what’s left over after deducting your credits from the Individual Income Tax that you owe.”

Residents should review their SC1040 form in order to determine their rebate total. Lines 21 and 22 can be added together to get a total, which can then be subtracted from line 15 if line 10 is empty.

Up to $800 of the remaining sum will be given. The amount of unpaid taxes will be deducted from the total rebate for any taxpayers who still owe money in taxes. The state Revenue Department will issue a Notice of Individual Income Tax Rebate Adjustment to those impacted by this.
